Macahambus Cave

   Located a few kilometers uptown in Barangay Lumbia, Cagayan de Oro City, is the historical Macahambus Cave. The cave is famous for the http://amzn.to/1Vdq8T3“Battle of Macahambus Hill”, which happened on June 4, 1900, the event that marked the first Filipino victory against the American troops.

   Upon arriving at the cave (along the national highway), a marker from the National Historical Institute can be seen beside the entrance, depicting the historical background of how the Macahambus Cave was used in battle in order to gain the upper hand against the enemy soldiers. There is no entrance fee when visiting the cave, although there are fees when you want to try the outdoor activities at the cave’s very own adventure park. Across the cave’s entrance are also a number of souvenir shops that sell different kinds of native handicrafts. The ideal time to visit the cave is during 10 AM, it is then usually off limits to visitors by late afternoon.

   
   

   Macahambus Cave is a scenic “tunnel” cave that goes from one opening to another. The cave has three chambers, which served as the hideout of the “Kagay-anon” soldiers during the war. Upon entering the first chamber, you’ll immediately feel the cold breeze of air coming from the cave’s opposite opening. At the middle chamber, visitors will have to crouch a little bit in order to fit through to get to the next room. When you reach the cave’s exit, you will instantly witness a beautiful panoramic view of the Cagayan River  (Wikipedia Article) from a grand terrace, a hundred feet above the ground.

   
   

   A few meters away from the cave is the Macahambus Gorge, which is easily accessible by going down a flight of over a hundred steps. Along the gorge is an adventure park for zip-line and canyoneering, there is also another underground cave in the area covered with lush greens.

   Getting There

   Macahambus Cave is around 6 miles away from the downtown area. There are several options to get there, first is by renting a car or driving your own vehicle. Drive up to Barangay Lumbia (going through Fr. Masterson Avenue), the cave is just a few kilometers away south of the old Cagayan de Oro City Airport.

   
   

   
   

   Another option is by commuting. Tourists can easily take a taxi ride to Macahambus Cave for around ₱400 ($8.80) (round trip, including the waiting time). Since there are only a few number of public transportation going around that part of Cagayan, ask the driver to wait for you outside the cave while you visit the attraction. Jeepneys around Carmen Market are also available to take you to Macahambus Cave. Just take any jeepney bound for Lumbia and Talakag, inform the driver upfront to drop you off at the Macahambus Cave.
