Britania island, San Agustin
A travel agency brochure once
described Surigao del Sur as a ‘kaleidoscope of superlatives with perfectly
balanced natural resources and breathtaking scenery.’ Indeed, Surigao Del Sur
is a brewing pot of tourist’s attractions. Attracting more than a handful, this
is a definite must visit place when in the Philippines.
Who would have thought that the
province harbors white sand islands comparable to, if not better than, the
world-renowned Boracay Island? Britania Islands, Surigao del Sur Province is
actually a group of 24- 25 unspoiled islets scattered around the Lianga Bay in
San Agustin, facing the Pacific Ocean.
The sight is remarkably fantastic.
With the bountiful mangroves and limestone formations surrounded by powdery
white sands, it spells forth of a 360 degrees perfect tranquility.
From afar, the islets look like
topiaries. However, since the islets are at close proximity, you can go island
hopping, snorkeling and basking under the sun all day long.
Be aware that there are no charges if
you want to visit the islands. If you intend to stay longer, you are however
advised to pack all that you need and more. There are no available cottages or
stores nearby to cater to your needs.
Remember, you have to keep the islets
clean. In short, you have to clean as you go and avoid clutter as much as
possible.
Arrive in Surigao del Sur either by
bus, hired van or private vehicle. If you are from Butuan City, a 3 to 4 hours
travel time or 5 to 6 hours if from Davao City.
Once in San Agustin, Surigao, ask the
tricycle driver to take you to the Salvacion Tourism Office. From Salvacion,
ride a habal-habal to Britania port, more or less 2.8km ahead. Hire a boat and
travel anywhere for between 15-25 minutes, depending on the sea condition.
Those who have gone and experience
the place, akin it to the Hundred Islands of Pangasinan.
Nevertheless, for first timers,
Britania Islands, Surigao del Sur Province is a definite undiscoverable
adventure haven worth discovering.
